Soweto Tour

Full Day Tour
South Africa’s largest and best known “black” city (an obsolete term since the demise of apartheid) sprawls across 100 square kilometres (39 square miles) of dusty and unkempt terrain to the southwest of Johannesburg. Much of it is electrified, a growing number of its streets are paved and the more prosperous residents have large and attractive homes. However, formal development has been haphazard and slow and the majority of Sowetans live in so-called matchbox houses in overcrowded conditions (there are no high-rises). Soweto – an acronym of South Western Townships was originally designed as a dormitory town. Many workers still commute daily by train and minibus taxi to Johannesburg and other nearby centres. Big business has passed Soweto by (until recently forced to do so by law) and commercial activity is represented by about 4000 tiny “spaza” stores and by the burgeoning informal sector (hawking, markets, backyard industries). Soweto has few of the civic amenities (public parks, libraries) that city dwellers of the more advanced communities take for granted. The local hospital, Baragwanath, is Africa’s largest, while the Sowetan newspaper is the country’s fastest growing in circulation terms. Social life revolves around the football stadiums and shebeens (home bars) and the more upmarket nightclubs and community halls.

The tour will take you past the vast Baragwanath Hospital, a modern university, the Mandela and Tutu homes, visit a shebeen, the luxury suburb of Diepkloof as well as squatter camps.

Cullinan Town and Diamond Mine

Full Day Tour
(this tour is normally done in conjunction with Pretoria making a full day tour) In 1902 Thomas Cullinan discovered the immense diamond pipe in the area now known as Cullinan. The Premier Mine was established and in 1905 the largest diamond ever found, the 3106 carat Cullinan stone, was unearthed here.

The quaint town of Cullinan is from a bygone era. Interesting curio shops and restaurants line the single main street. Daily surface tours of the Premier Mine are offered.

Lesedi Cultural Village

6 Hour Tour
Situated 18 km north of Lanseria on the R512 this is a collection of 4 authentic tribal villages, namely Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi and Basotho.

Visitors are introduced to the customs of each tribe who live in the traditional manner in the villages.

For the curious visitor a Sangoma will divine the future.

Daily dancing and stick fighting displays take place combined with either a traditional lunch (or dinner).

Gold Reef City

Built around Crown Mines’ number 14 shaft – this is an actual gold mine that at one stage held the world record for amount of gold recovered and in 1916 held the world shaft sinking record. Authentic turn of the century mine dwellings complete with genuine antiques, costumes and artefacts of that age are one of the major features of Gold Reef City. The style of living in those times becomes immediately apparent when you step into these dwellings with their cool interiors and Victorian furnishings while the inns, taverns and music halls bring back to life the rollicking, roistering side of life of Johannesburg from a hundred years ago. Experience the thrill of descending 200 metres underground where old and new mining techniques are demonstrated as well as watching a gold pour. Other attractions include mine dancing displays, gold panning, mining and historical exhibits as well as numerous restaurants and shops.
